Your melody doesn’t have to be simple

Just a moment ago I was reading Rhodri’s post. Rhodri is the new keyboard-player of the new Scritti Politti. I have seen him play live a couple of times and he fits in perfectly. He also has a great band called The Free French which reminds me of XTC which is a huge compliment (please do a PayPal donation Rhodri).

But okay, that video. You should check it out! A child singing this complex melody. Something a lot of children are doing I guess. At least my daughter, Puck, who’s turning 4 within a couple of days. But somehow most popular music has rather one-dimensional melody lines. Classical music is totally the opposite. Why is that? Is the average pop-fan more stupid than the average classical listener? Or is it just a matter of taste?

Don’t know exactly but I do know children have deep listening skills no doubt!
