@marco Good point. Certainly not with my weblog :). Yet, the idea is not foreign even to weblogs.

My brother loves recent-vintage Cadillacs. He runs a website called http://www.caddyinfo.com

In addition to google ads,and paid sponsors,
he has ‘subscribers’, who “join” the website to support its mission. They are, in a sense, joining a site which they could read for free. Why do they do this? A sense of shared community.

It is like our public library. It is city-owned, and supported by tax dollars. Yet many of us join “the friends of the library” and donate more money to it. We want our community library to have the support to buy more books and help everyone.

I see the music situation as similar–artist and listeners forming communities. I think this is what has paid Kristin Hersh’s recording expenses in the past few years. I think this model is okay.

@gurdonark: true, there’s no one way. Although it might be very hard to ask people to pay you money to read your blog for example.

I see nothing wrong with “pay what you want”. It is a device that makes sense for people who see their relationship with the people who listen to them as a kind of social contract. I don’t see it as a cure-all, but as one way to try to construct a community. It will not work for everyone, and perhaps not for many–but it’s not a bad thing, just a different thing.

I am less in favor of huge theories about music and more in favor of sharing in each of its forms.

@Sanne: ik heb de knop er pas sinds een week of zo op. Nog niets opgeleverd. Even zien. Donaties werken wel, doe het zelf ook af en toe. Waarom ben jij ermee gestopt?

Andersom: waarom zou niet bij alle content een vrijwillige donatie knop mogen staan? Men hoeft er niet voor te betalen, maar als ik dat wel wil, moet men mij dat ook wel heel makkelijk maken. En ik wil dat best vaak! Vind eigenlijk wel een goed idee als elk platform (youtube, vimeo, flickr, wordpress.com etc) een widget zou mogen aanbieden dat je een donatieknop naast je content knop kan zetten. Heb op mijn blog ook een tijdje zo’n tipit.to widget gehad, liep ook best aardig. Veel mensen die kleine bedragen wilden doneren.
